Downeast Institute

Downeast Institute (DEI) is the easternmost marine research laboratory and education center in the US. It is Maine’s first and only public shellfish hatchery.

Type of Structure: Steel, concrete and wood.

The main challenge on this project was a very tight project (remote) site with only one access point.  We had to incorporate the owners exsiting lab systems into the new lab addition.

Our Superentendent worked with the owners representaive on a daily basis to coordinate deliveries and step by step on making sure that the delicate habitat of the lab and land was not disturbed.

” Kevin Bowman, who was our Project Manager, was exceedingly patient and thoughtful during the whole process. Rick Clukey,  the Project Superintendent., somehow knew every detail of every aspect of the project at a moment’s notice. The resulting  structures speak to their skill and effectiveness. It is a great testament to Bowman’s team that our beautiful facility which met our wildly high expectations, and will  support discovery, innovation and education for all of Maine, was delivered well under budget. “
