bangor humane society logoOctober 15, 2019 The Bangor Humane Society announces that construction on their facility located on 693 Mt.  Hope Ave in Bangor will begin this week.

BHS is excited to also announce that Bowman Constructors won the bid process and has been awarded the capital renovation and expansion project.

”Bowman Constructors is honored to have been chosen to be a part of the team responsible for making this vision a reality.” says Brian Bowman: Vice-President of Bowman Constructors. “The Bangor Humane Society has a long history of giving our furry friends a stable roof over their heads. We are excited to help the Humane Society expand the roof over theirs so that they may continue to provide valuable education, training and adoption services throughout our local region.”

Some notable mentions:

  • The project timeline is set to begin this week with an estimated completion in early summer of 2020. During this time the shelter will still be operating for business. As of now, the agency’s operational hours have not been changed. However, the safety of both the community’s humans and animals as construction unfolds are a first priority, so BHS asks the public to call ahead or check their Facebook page before visiting to ensure operational hours have not been impacted by construction.  Additionally, BHS also asks that during the following months people use caution when visiting the shelter during the construction phase of the project.
  • The removal of incinerator will be the first action implemented of Phase I of the project, scheduled to take place on Tuesday, October 15th. This marks a pivotal event in the agency’s history, demonstrating the significant shift of a local animal welfare movement that has devoted the last twenty years to saving more lives. Operating with over a 95% live release rate annually, the incinerator is no longer fiscally or operationally relevant. This space will be re-purposed into a canine transport room to welcome dogs rescued from euthanasia in overcrowded shelters through our transport partners from across the country.
  • The headstones located in the back yard of the shelter that were part of a former pet cemetery will be respectfully relocated in order for the contractors to repair damage to the landscape. The headstones will be preserved and incorporated into the renovation plan.

The current BHS team is excited to begin the facility renovations that will help save more pet lives and better serve the community. If you have any questions about any part of the upcoming renovation plan or construction phases please contact Suzan Prendergast, Executive Director.

We appreciate the public’s patience, understanding and flexibility during this time.
